Before and after long to wavy dark brown balayage bob

#1: The Big Chop With Built-In Warmth

I’ve barely started, but I’m guessing this before-and-after is why I tell my clients that chopping length off doesn’t mean sacrificing personality. The longer version to the left looks nice, sure, but it has this empty feeling and whatever color was added is hardly visible. The bob on the right, however, has all these warm brown tones reflecting off the waves, and it feels so full and bouncy. The long hair was just suppressing all of that. If you’re worried about going for a shorter look, just do it! The balayage was definitely there in the longer version, but no one could see it.

Bouncy dark brown balayage bob with teal satin top

#2 The Bedroom-Ready Bouncy Bob

I am obsessed with the volume going on here! This bob has that blown out turn under look that gives shampoo commercial vibes from the back, and the balayage is running through, in these long, fine ribbons that just highlight every single bend in the blow dry. The warm brown tones with the brown blouse is doing something really good for the color that I want to highlight. If you go this route, jewel tones in your closet are going to be your bestie.

Rounded dark brown bob with cinnamon balayage streaks

#3 The Polished Sphere Bob With Cinnamon Highlights

I am finishing up with this style because I believe it might be the most perfectly executed combination of cuts and colors incorporated within this year’s collection. This bob has a beautiful rounded almost spherical shape from the back, and the vertical sectioned cinnamon balayage perfectly follows the curve of the head so that color and shape become one. The dark roots offer depth at the crown, and the cinnamon warms the mid-lengths to create an incredibly rich, dimensional color that looks like it belongs in a museum exhibit about beautiful hair. If you’re going to give your colorist one photo from this post, let this one be it.

Messy chin-length dark brown bob with caramel balayage

#4 Messy-Chic Chin Bob With Hidden Caramel

The texture here is amazing! The caramel pieces catch my eye too although it seems to have some pieces that are camouflaged, peeking through as if the wind brushes over those top layers. This is the perfect low-commitment balayage! It’s going to look so intentional as it grows out. The chin-length cut and soft, undone pieces are so effortless in a way that you can’t get with more rigid color placements.

Inverted dark brown balayage bob with navy outfit

#5 Sharp Inverted Bob With Warm Brown Dimension

I absolutely adore this inverted bob. It’s got a nice clean cut that’s shorter in the back with an angled line that leads down to longer pieces in the front. The balayage has been such an even, good job throughout the hair, that rather than looking like a color job, it appears very natural. To keep the nice, crisp angle in the cut, regular trims are necessary; however, with the placement of the balayage, it is very dark at the roots, and this means that the color can easily go three to four months between touch-ups.

Sleek blunt dark brown balayage bob in a salon

#6 Glass-Smooth Blunt Bob

This shine is incredible! This is a classic one-length blunt bob that has been straightened within an inch of its life, and the balayage looks insane. The light reflection is so clear. The fine brown pieces are bouncing light to you in a way that solid dark brown wouldn’t do. If you want smoothness like this, a good hair glossing treatment over the balayage will give you the color richness with the gloss surface to make it look like actual glass.

Short textured dark brown balayage bob with blue shirt

#7 Layered Textured Crop With Caramel Flashes

I’m getting cool, editorial vibes from this *tap layers, Grown out cut, and how the caramel balayage is scattered through the hair without any real intent and looks ‘accidentally’ done. The length sits right around the ears in the back and the jawline in the front, it’s a fabulous length for anyone with strong jawlines/cheekbones because it just frames everything up nicely without any effort.

Tousled dark brown bob with plum balayage tones

#8 Tousled Plum-Brown Chin-Length Bob

I think this one is really pretty. I love the subtle plum or cool burgundy in the brown balayage. It adds a moodier and cooler tone to the look. It still appears dark brown and not red but that cool hint is an interesting addition. If your skin tone has cool or neutral undertones, consider asking your colorist about this variation. It’s the type of subtle difference that leaves everything looking more in balance with your natural coloring.

Angled dark brown balayage bob with mauve blazer

#9 Structured Angled Bob With Toffee Streaks

This bob’s angle is steeper than others, and it is noticeably shorter in the back and longer in the front. The balayage beautifully follows this angle. The toffee-toned pieces are placed smartly in the longer front sections, as they keep the back darker and more structural, while drawing warmth towards the face. If you work in a more corporate environment and want something that is still considered professional, this color placement is great for that.

Rounded dark brown balayage short bob with cardigan

#10 The Perfect Rounded Short Bob

I would describe this pic to be what I would imagine someone with naturally beautiful dark hair looks like when they just let it be its best self. The rounded shape looks so clean! The balayage on the ends is just the thinnest threads of lighter brown woven through, definitely more like natural highlights than anything done in a salon. The blunt perimeter grounds the whole shape and keeps it from looking too precious or overdone. Just a really, really solid bob that I would not change a single thing about.

Dark brown balayage bob with flipped-under ends

#11 Polished Flip-Under With Hidden Warmth

The ends on this bob are doing that beautiful soft flip-under that makes the whole shape look so intentional, and what I really like is how the balayage is concentrated more on the interior layers so you get these hints of warm brown only when the hair moves or when you see it from behind like this. From the front, this probably reads as almost solid dark brown with just a whisper of something warmer, which is honestly such a sophisticated way to wear balayage. It’s the color equivalent of whispering instead of shouting.

Short piecy dark brown balayage bob in natural light

#12 The Piecy Layered Short Bob

This haircut is at the shorter length of a bob touching just at the nape. The layers are textured to make individual pieces that separate and reflect light on their own. The balayage is working double time here as it is both giving the color some dimension and bringing the texture of the cut to the surface. The lighter pieces highlight each layer and movement which might get lost in solid dark brown. It’s one of those haircuts that genuinely looks better the messier it gets.

Dark brown bob with warm copper balayage on ends

#13 Warm Copper-Kissed Ends on a Soft Bob

I love how the balayage here pulls a little warmer and coppery than the others. It looks like the balayage is really only painted on the bottom third of the hair which makes for a really stunning gradient effect where the roots are dark espresso coffee and the ends are a brighter warm brown that looks almost like amber in certain lights. The soft wave gives just enough of a shape to really showcase the color change without being too fussy. A color depositing conditioner in a warm brown shade would keep those ends looking fresh for ages.

Choppy dark brown balayage bob with terra cotta jacket

#14 Lived-In Choppy Bob With Peek-a-Boo Warmth

This look is the easiest to wear in the whole roundup because it needs almost no styling. The cut has some texture with slight razor ends, the balayage is subtle enough that you only see it when the hair is in motion, and it looks like someone with good hair simply went about their day. For air dry and go types, this is the reference photo for you.

Graduated dark brown balayage bob with navy dress

#15 Sculpted Chestnut Graduated Bob

I don’t use the word ‘Immaculate’ lightly, but I think the shape on this is immaculate! It is a graduated bob with short layers stacked in the back to build up this perfectly rounded silhouette, and the balayage is painting chestnut tones right through the middle section where the shape is fullest. The result is the dimension and the volume are working together to make the hair look thicker and even more sculptural than it probably is on its own. Whoever cut this understood architecture!

Classic straight dark brown balayage bob

#16 The No-Nonsense Classic Bob

There’s something about this picture that makes me want to point my finger and say, “that one, do that one.” It’s a typical bob, chin-length one-length bob, with a subtle bevel at the ends and the most faint balayage you could ask for. The brown strands are only visible when the sun hits them just right and the rest of the time, it looks like natural deep brown hair. This is the type of hair that looks good in a boardroom and at the Saturday farmer’s market, and I think that’s really nice.

Wavy dark brown balayage lob against a brick wall

#17 Warm Wavy Lob With Brick-Wall Attitude

This style has a beautiful gradient of brown, from almost black at the roots to warm chestnut at the ends, and the waves really show off the beautiful layering. The length looks great as it just touches the shoulders, which is the most versatile length if you’re someone who likes to wear it down, half up, or tucked behind your ears. A little texture spray and some scrunching on damp hair and air dried would get you pretty close to this look.

Feathered dark brown balayage bob against concrete

#18 Feathered Concrete-Cool Bob

The layering on this bob is so good that the ends look feathered, and the balayage is sitting perfectly in those feathered sections so every little piece that flips out or bends reflects the light in layers. I think what makes this one special is that the color is really dark, like almost espresso at the roots, and the brown is only half a shade or so lighter, so the whole thing stays super rich and moody. For anyone with thick hair who worries about bobs looking too helmet like, this level of interior layering is the answer.

Choppy dark brown bob with subtle balayage tips

#19 The Undone Rust-Tipped Crop

I appreciate the uniqueness of this style compared to others. It gives off a more wild and out-there feeling. The warm tones are barely seen just right at the ends and the back. From the look, if someone asked “did you color your hair?” they would believe you if you said no. It looks like you have a lot of control over the styling. The cut has a lot of textures and the ends look sharp, which gives a nice chunky edgy look.

Polished dark brown bob with fine balayage highlights

#20 Polished Salon-Fresh Bob

This type of bob can have people thinking you have regular blowout appointments. The shine is absolutely stunning. The balayage has been manipulated in very fine, close-together sections so it looks like a single color with shine rather than obvious streaks. A round brush blowout with a boar bristle round brush will get you this look, plus a flat iron pass on the ends to tuck them under.

Stacked dark brown balayage bob with a satin top

#21 Sleek Stacked Graduated Bob

This one is all about the cut! The back graduation is angled down to give the sharp silhouette, and the balayage compliments the cut so well. The brown threaded pieces are so fine that they act more like natural light variation rather than actual highlights. Against the rust satin top, the whole color story is just obsessed! Be honest with yourself, are you going to keep up the six week trim kind of cut?

Curly dark brown balayage bob with golden highlights

#22 Sunset Promenade Curls

These curls are doing a lot of work, as the balayage is very minimal lightening, but the curl pattern opens everything up and shows how much warmer hair is underneath. This is a really good reference photo to show your colorist if you have naturally wavy or curly hair, because it shows you how little balayage you need when your texture already has dimension. The crown volume is amazing, and I can definitely see some layering in the middle to achieve that rounded look.

Dark brown balayage lob with soft waves on coast

#23 Coastal Trail Lob With Caramel Ribbons

It hits that ideal spot at the collarbone that makes it a lob, but acts more like a bob. The balayage placement is also very clever here. The lighter sections are at the ends and underneath, so when the hair moves or curls under, you see these warm brown flashes that you wouldn’t see if she stood still. It’s the kind of color that changes in photos every time.

Choppy dark brown balayage bob with misty forest view

#24 Foggy Morning Textured Chop

I appreciate when a haircut gives off the impression that the wearer doesn’t care about it because it nearly always indicates that someone actually put a lot of effort into getting the cut super precise. This choppy bob has very blunt ends and just the right amount of texture in the mid-lengths to avoid looking blocky, plus the balayage is dark and subtle enough that it merely serves to keep the hair from looking flat. It really gives off an “I woke up in a cabin and my hair just does this” vibe.

Wavy dark brown balayage bob at a marina

#25 Harbor Breeze Waves

This hairstyle probably took around twenty minutes to complete and appears very elegant. The body of the waves has a gentle, soft bend instead of a spiral curl. The sunkissed look with woven brown tones is stunning. A 1.25 inch curling iron would create the same look with alternating directions, plus the body on the ends would keep the curl and the length would hold the curl.
