This policy explains what Femzen does with personal information. We have tried to write it plainly. Femzen is a women’s magazine and directory of independent brands, published at femzen.com and run from 52 West 27th Street, New York, NY 10001. For anything in this policy, or to ask us to see, correct or delete what we hold about you, write to removals@femzen.com.
The short version
- You can read Femzen without giving us anything. A normal visit sets no cookies and loads no advertising or analytics services.
- We collect personal information only when you choose to give it: to subscribe to our newsletter, to claim a brand profile, or to write to us.
- We do not sell your information, and we do not share it for advertising.
- You can unsubscribe with one click and ask us to delete your information at any time.
What we collect, and why
When you read the site
Like every website, our hosting company records technical details of each request (your network address, the page requested, the time and your browser type) in server logs. We use them to keep the site running and secure, and they are deleted on the host’s normal schedule. We do not use advertising or analytics trackers, and we do not build profiles of visitors.
The Friday Zen newsletter
If you subscribe, we collect your email address. We email you a link and add you to the list only after you open it, so no one can sign up your address without you. We keep a record of what you agreed to: the wording you saw, the date and time, and the page you signed up from. We do not store your network address. We keep a scrambled, hourly-changing fingerprint of it for a few hours to spot abuse, and it cannot be turned back into your address. Sign-ups that are never confirmed are deleted after seven days.
We use your address only to send the newsletter and to confirm your subscription. To deliver the newsletter we use an email delivery service, EngineMailer, which receives your address for that purpose only. Every email has an unsubscribe link that works in one click. Legal basis, where that applies to you: your consent.
Open and click tracking. Newsletter emails sent through EngineMailer contain a tiny invisible image and tracked links, so that EngineMailer can record whether an email was opened and which links were clicked. We look at this in totals, to learn what readers find useful, and not to build a profile of any one person. Many email apps let you block remote images, which stops the opening count. When you unsubscribe, EngineMailer keeps your address marked as inactive so that you are not emailed again; if you ask us to delete your information, we remove it from EngineMailer as well as from our own records.
Femzen Perks
Confirming your subscription unlocks discount codes on the device you used. To do that we set one cookie, named fz_member. It contains a signed number and no personal details, lasts up to 180 days, and stops working when you unsubscribe. Some perks are affiliate arrangements, and those say so on the page.
Claiming a brand profile
If you ask to claim a profile, we collect your name, your role, your email address and any message you write, so a person at Femzen can check the claim. If it is approved, we also keep the logo and photos you upload, which are covered by the Content License, Warranty, and Release Agreement you accept. We re-encode uploaded images, which removes location and camera data. Legal basis, where that applies to you: our legitimate interest in listing accurate information, and your agreement.
Maps
Maps on place pages load only when you press “Show map”. At that point your browser contacts OpenStreetMap to draw the map, so OpenStreetMap receives your network address. We do not load the map otherwise. See OpenStreetMap’s own privacy policy for what it does.
Shopping links
Some links go to retailers, such as Amazon. They are affiliate links: if you buy, Femzen may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The retailer may set its own cookies when you click, under its own policy. Whether we earn something never changes our scores or rankings.
Writing to us
If you email us, we keep your message and address so we can reply and for as long as is reasonable afterwards.
Who else handles your information
- Our web host and its content network store and deliver the site and keep the server logs described above.
- Our email provider handles the mailbox that sends confirmation emails and receives your replies.
- EngineMailer delivers the newsletter, as described above.
We do not sell personal information. We do not share it for advertising. We may disclose it if the law requires, or to protect Femzen and its readers from fraud or abuse. Our providers may process information in the United States or in other countries where they operate.
How long we keep it
- Newsletter address and consent record: until you unsubscribe. After that the address stays on our records, marked as unsubscribed, only so that you are not added again by mistake. If you ask us, we delete it entirely, from Femzen and from EngineMailer.
- Unconfirmed newsletter sign-ups: seven days.
- Brand claims and uploads: for as long as the profile exists, and a short while after.
- Server logs: on the host’s normal schedule.
Your choices and rights
You can ask us at any time to tell you what we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, or to stop using it. You can withdraw consent to the newsletter whenever you like, using the link in any email. Write to removals@femzen.com and we will answer within 30 days.
If you live in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you also have the right to receive a copy of your information in a portable format, to object to certain uses, and to complain to your data protection authority. If you live in California or another US state with a privacy law, you have the rights that law gives you; we do not sell or share personal information as those laws define them, and we will not treat you differently for using your rights.
Security
We protect the information we hold with access controls, encrypted connections, and by storing as little as we can. Access links we email you, such as a link to confirm your subscription or to manage a brand profile, are random, expire, and are stored on our side only in a form that cannot be reversed. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot promise absolute security.
Children
Femzen is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has given us theirs, tell us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top and, for changes that matter, say so in the newsletter.
